FlipBook 6 is a professional level, hand drawn animation software used in major studios. It has many different versions and levels and can be used with a wacom or other tablet or used with a camera/scanner if the student wishes to animate on paper. If your student is serious about hand drawn animation, this is the program we recommend.
Hand Drawn: Free Download/Open Source
Pencil is an animation/drawing software for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. It lets you create traditional hand-drawn animation (cartoon) using both bitmap and vector graphics. Pencil is a very nice animation software, but as it is free and open source, there are some known bugs and limitations, especially when run on Mac. Your student will only be able to draw with a tablet or mouse as it does not support loading images from a camera, but if you are wanting to play around with hand drawn animation before making an investment, this is a good option.
